What stage are you at in your apprenticeship journey?
I am 3 months into the apprenticeship, I have been learning and practicing the screen printing process and the problems I may face when printing, such as a flooded print or a machinery issue. I have just started learning about screen making and the process of developing the artwork onto them. I also have been learning how to clean the screens and the process of that, after they have been used for a job.
What made you decide to undertake an apprenticeship? How did you come to work in print?
The idea of printing absolutely fascinated me as soon as I heard about the details of how the printing process works and all the different type of ways of printing. I knew practical experience was the best way for me to learn new things and refine my knowledge on how the printing industry works. This path felt like the best choice for me and I am looking extremely forward to expanding my knowledge and skills of printing.
Tell us about some of the key knowledge, skills, and behaviours you have developed since starting your apprenticeship.
I have a much better understanding of how the print industry works and how every printing process is different and why. I definitely have developed better quality control skills by ensuring that printed materials meet the industry standards and customer specifications. I also have a better understanding of what is an ideal, acceptable print and what to look out for if any problems arise. I also have a better understanding on how to adapt and follow health and safety regulations which are more specific to the printing industry, ensuring a safe working environment.
Tell us about a typical day at work for you.
Firstly in the morning, I practice what I have already learned, which at the moment is screen printing. Any new mistakes I make I note which includes how to fix the problem as well as preventing it. Then in the afternoon, I learn a new type of print, role or machine. For now I am learning about screen making which includes how to lay the screens, developing the artwork onto the screens, washing the screens off after a previous job and stretching the screens to prepare them for laying.
What’s the most enjoyable part of your apprenticeship?
Definitely progression in my knowledge, thankful for that I have some ideas which I’m sharing with my colleagues. Discovering new solution, being more confident in contacts with managers.
